Dear Master Da Ji,
My name is Jure, I'm from Slovenia. I'm a member of ICBI and a friend of Adrian Wyles (Shi Da Dao). When I told him that I am now focusing on the Lotus Sutra and studying Zhiyi, he kindly recommended that I write to You. He informed me that you are a specialist on Tientai thought.
I would love to learn more about You and the Great Calm Society. Do you lecture on Tientai Buddhism as well as Ch'an? Did Your PhD thesis focus on Zhiyi or Tientai?

My background is Western philosophy, I graduated 2 years ago at the University of Ljubljana, MA in Philosophy (my thesis was: "The Problem of Death in Heidegger and Nishitani.") Since then I've been researching Buddhist philosophy on my own. I've been also practicing, again mostly on my own, since there is very little Buddhism in Slovenia. I received many good advice about practice from Adrian, but now I try to practice according to Zhiyi's Manual (Smaller Teaching on Calm and Insight (Xiao zhiguan)) - it is very hard to do it on my own, though.

Since encountering the Buddhism of Tientai and the Lotus Sutra, I felt a strong attraction to this Sutra, one that I never got from any other text, Buddhist or otherwise. I suddenly felt joy, and I knew this is the Dharma door for me - this is what I need to study and practice all my life. Even if I don't understand it fully yet, I have strong faith that this Sutra can help me and many people today in the Age of Dharma Decline.

I inquired about academic options in this regard; I found that Fo Guang University in Taiwan has a MA in Buddhist Studies in English. I thought of applying so that I could study Zhiyi and hopefully learn Chinese. FGU are the only ones who have a program entirely in English. Staying in Taiwan would also mean I could start learning Chinese much faster. Do You perhaps have any advice regarding that? I will be grateful for any feedback.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Regards,
Jure

Dear Jure,

Nice to know you.
You find right man because I have taught Xiao zhiguan for many times.
Of course I lecture on Tientai Buddhism, e.g. Xiao zhiguan, Six subtle doors, Analysis of Oder ways to dhyana-paramita, and I will lecture on Maha samatha and vipasyana.
My PhD thesis focuses on both Zhiyi and Hui-neng, i.e. Tientai and Ch'an.
I'm very glad to hear that this is what I need to study and practice all my life.
Your opinion, this Sutra can help me and many people today in the Age of Dharma Decline, is very good and excellent.
You are right, FGU are the only ones who have a program entirely in English in Taiwan.
So you can go to FGU’s website and start to apply for an agreement to go to the university. Maybe it needs exam, you can ask them.
If your Chinese become better and better, you can go to my official website
http://www.muchcalm.com.tw/ to listen to the lectures on Tientai Sect.
